Audiology

Comprehensive Audiological Testing

Adults: Includes pure tone air and bone conduction testing, speech reception testing, word recognition testing, and middle ear testing (i.e. eardrum movement).
Ages 3-5 yrs. or as needed: Includes all of the above, however the tonal testing is accomplished using "conditioned play audiometry" in which the child drops a block in a bucket or builds a Lego tower each time he/she hears the beep.
Pedatric ages 6 mos. to 3 yrs: Speech and tone testing are completed in soundfield. Word recognition testing is not completed due to limited patient vocabulary.

Electrophysiological Testing (Otoacoustic Emissions-OAE & Auditory Brainstem Response-ABR):

These tests measure the structure and function of the auditory system and require no response from the patient. These are often utilized for newborns to estimate hearing sensitivity, as they are too young to participate in behavioral testing. These tests, specifically the ABR, may also be utilized in a neurological capacity to determine the neurological synchrony of the auditory system.

Videonystagmography (VNG) testing:

Test for dizziness. The vestibular portion of the inner ear is assessed through various measures to locate any dysfunction and sources of a patient's dizziness and/or vertigo.

Hearing aid evaluation, fitting/dispensing, and analyses:

Review audiometric test results with patients and guide them towards the most appropriate hearing aid instruments. After the initial fitting of the hearing aid, electroacoustic analyses can be performed to ensure appropriate amplification settings.

Assistive devices:

Custom hearing protection, swim plugs, musician's earplugs, custom iPod earphones

Occupational Therapy

Incorporates meaningful and purposeful occupation to enable people with limitations or impairments to participate in everyday life. Occupational therapists work with individuals, families, groups and populations to facilitate health and well-being through engagement or re-engagement in occupation and enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life.

  • Hand Therapy

A type of rehabilitation performed by an occupational or physical therapist on patients with conditions affecting the hands and upper extremities.

  • Work Hardening

An Occupational Therapy program designed to return injured workers to a previously identified type of employment.

Physical Therapy

Provides services to individuals and populations to develop, maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability. Physical therapy is concerned with identifying and maximizing quality of life and movement potential within the spheres of promotion, prevention, treatment/intervention, habilitation and rehabilitation.

Orthopedic Shoulder Services

Crystal Run’s fellowship-trained physicians specializing in treatment and diagnosis of the shoulder are the only surgeons in the region performing Total Shoulder Reconstruction, Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement, along with a wide variety of arthroscopic surgeries for rotator cuff tears, and dislocating shoulders.

Leading-edge Treatments at Crystal Run:

  • Total Shoulder Replacement Surgery (arthroplasty):

A surgical procedure to replace the glenohumeral joint with a prosthetic implant to restore comfort and function to shoulders damaged by degenerative joint disease, osteoarthritis, or rheumatoid arthritis.

  • Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement Surgery:

A surgical procedure using a special prosthesis to restore comfort and improve function in shoulders with failed conventional total shoulder replacement or combined arthritis, rotator cuff tears and instability.

  • Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair:

A surgical procedure performed through small incisions using a camera to visualize the inside of a joint, and special instruments to repair the torn rotator cuff back to the bone. The arthroscopic technique minimizes both pain and blood loss, and makes for a faster, less painful recovery.

  • Arthroscopic Instability Repair:

Shoulders that dislocate frequently have a torn cartilage structure called the labrum. The labrum can be repaired back to bone to prevent future shoulder dislocations.

In fact, ours is the first and only AASM accredited sleep center in Orange and Sullivan Counties.

Do you need a sleep study?

Known as a “polysomnogram,” a sleep study is a non-invasive test which records your sleep pattern, breathing, oxygen level, heart rate and rhythm and muscle tone while you sleep overnight in a comfortable, private, hotel-like room in the Sleep Center at Crystal Run Healthcare.

Anyone who consistently has trouble sleeping will benefit greatly from a sleep study. If you have any of the following concerns, a sleep study may be urgently needed:

  • You’re overweight
  • You snore
  • You feel sleepy during the day

The Sleep Quiz:

It takes just a few minutes to find out if you’re among the 60 million Americans trying to cope with a significant sleep disorder. The answers to these simple questions could be the start of changing the quality of your sleep for the rest of your life.
