Urogynecology at Crystal Run Healthcare

Crystal Run Healthcare is committed to women's health. Our multi-disciplinary team of doctors, nurses, and therapists provide coordinated and comprehensive urologic care to get you back in control of your active lifestyle. Our highly-skilled urogynecology team can treat everything from benign diseases of the bladder to urinary incontinence, to minor gynecological conditions, to pelvic floor reconstruction.

The physicians at Crystal Run Healthcare are experts at treating bladder prolapse (cystocele), a common condition that occurs when the bladder drops and protrudes through a weak pelvic floor. Treatment varies, depending on the severity of the condition and the underlying cause. In some cases, no active treatment is necessary. Conservative care may include physical therapy or even hormone replacement therapy, while more advanced cases may require prolapsed bladder surgery.

Our team also cares for women who suffer from any number of bladder problems, including overactive bladder, bladder leakage due to urinary incontinence, and posterior vaginal prolapse (rectocele).

Female Urinary Incontinence and Treatment Options

Each year, millions of women experience an accidental release of urine, known as Urinary incontinence (UI) or, more commonly, bladder leakage.  Female incontinence is very common, especially among older women. It can seriously impact women emotionally and psychologically and disrupt their social lives. While no single treatment works for everyone, many women can find improvement through certain exercises, medications, and urogynecology surgery, among other treatments.

What Causes Urinary Incontinence?

Urinary incontinence is not a disease but, rather, a symptom of many conditions. All of the following can contribute to urinary incontinence:

  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Menopause
  • The structure of the female urinary tract
  • A pelvic floor disorder, such as pelvic organ prolapse (POP); for example, a dropped bladder or vagina
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Frequent constipation

Common Types of Urinary Incontinence

  • Stress Incontinence – This results when the pelvic floor is weak, or when the outlet muscles aren’t strong enough to control urine flow. Stress incontinence is common in women who have had many children. A cough, a sneeze, or certain types of exercise can increase pressure on the bladder, forcing urine to leak out.
  • Urge Incontinence – (“Overactive bladder”) is most prevalent in older adults. It occurs when the bladder wall muscle suddenly contracts before the bladder is full. The result is a strong urge to urinate. Frequently, a small amount of urine will leak before a person can get to a bathroom in time.
  • Overflow Incontinence – This happens when the bladder gets too full. The cause is usually a problem in fully emptying the bladder in the first place. Symptoms include leaking of urine and urinating frequently, usually with small amounts coming out each time.
  • Mixed Incontinence – This occurs most often in older women and is caused by a combination of urge incontinence and stress incontinence.
