Focus on Wellness during June’s National Safety Month
As the school year ends and summer begins, it’s the perfect time to think about safety. This week’s safety topic for June’s National Safety Month is wellness!
The truth is it’s easy to forget about wellness. We just expect our bodies to do what we need from them, but how often do we assess what our body needs from us?
Make healthier choices part of your daily routine to turn them into habits. We’ve put together three easy steps to get you focused on wellness in no time!
Be active. Whether it’s looking for a front row parking spot or taking the elevator to the 2nd floor, most of us unconsciously make decisions that affect our wellbeing every day. Next time you go to park at the grocery store or at work, park far away from the door and be sure to take the stairs as much as possible. A little bit of exercise can go a long way!
Get Adequate Sleep. Lack of sleep can not only cause decreased productivity, it can be dangerous. Driving a car after not getting the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep each night is similar to driving a car after drinking three beers. To avoid fatigue, try to set a sleep schedule and stick to it and be sure to avoid chemicals that can prevent you from sleeping like alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine.
Schedule a Yearly Checkup. A yearly physical with your primary care physician (PCP) is a key factor in maintaining wellness. A checkup is a great way to make sure your health is on track and the perfect time for you to discuss any concerns or questions with your doctor. If you’re having trouble getting the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep each night, talk to your doctor about it. You may be one of the more than 70 million Americans who have a sleep disorder according to the National Institutes of Health.
Take time each day to focus on your wellness, your body will thank you! For more tips and National Safety Month materials, check out the National Safety Council’s website here.
