About Rheumatologists and Their Training
Rheumatologists focus on the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis and other diseases of the joints, muscles, and bones, as well as certain autoimmune system diseases. Collectively, these are referred to as rheumatic diseases.
There are more than 100 types of rheumatic disease. Some are the result of wear and tear, such as osteoarthritis, while others, such as rheumatoid arthritis, are the result of immune system problems. Additional examples of rheumatic disease include (but are not limited to):
- Ankylosing spondylitis
- Bursitis
- Fibromyalgia
- Gout
- Lupus
- Osteoporosis
- Psoriatic arthritis
- Tendonitis
- Scleroderma
Rheumatologists complete four years of medical school or osteopathic education, followed by three years of residency training in either internal medicine or pediatrics (or both). After residency training, rheumatologists participate in a two to three-year fellowship, during which they learn about chronic musculoskeletal conditions and autoimmune diseases; this is followed by an examination to become board certified in rheumatology.
Rheumatologists must periodically become recertified and fulfill certain continuing education requirements—this ensures they are up to date on the latest science and medical treatments.
Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Care
Because autoimmune diseases can be complex and affect multiple systems, Crystal Run takes a multi-disciplinary team approach to treatment. Your care may include physical therapy, nutritional guidance, weight control, and, when indicated, even joint replacement. Your rheumatoid doctor will coordinate with other specialists to ensure you receive a complete continuum of care.
Our secure internal electronic health records (EHR) system helps us streamline your care even further by making your records available in a centralized location where all specialists involved in your care can access the latest information about your treatment.
The highly regarded rheumatologists at Crystal Run look forward to providing you with the exceptional care for which we’re known. We offer rheumatology services at our Middletown, Newburgh, Rock Hill, and West Nyack locations. Please call us to schedule an appointment.
