My Cancer Story by Oncologist, Dr. Marc Rappaport

Blog

We all know someone who’s been affected by cancer. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re highlighting our Real Men Wear Pink candidate, Oncologist and cancer survivor, Marc Rappaport, DO. Dr. Rappaport takes us through his own personal cancer story.

I’m 28 years old and I was just told “you have cancer.“  Hmmmmmm I was 2 months away from finishing my Residency, moving to Philadelphia for my cancer Fellowship, and I was almost ready to pop the question to Emily, my now wife!

What I’ve come to realize is young adults with cancer have a vastly different path than older patients due to so many psychological and physical changes that are more impactful at that time of their life.

When you’re a young adult, dating, keeping a job, relationships, and fertility are all things you’re thinking about.

All of the above were ruminating in my head when I received my diagnosis.

I took on the challenge and now 15 years later I am cancer free, and able to share the story with my patients young and old alike because this is such a bonding moment and also a moment of trust and companionship.  Many patients tell me “wow you know what we are going through.” From the endless bills, to not getting clear answers from the doctors or even a returned call, (that doesn’t pertain to me LOL), the understanding is invaluable

I strive to make my patients feel like we are in the battle together and a saying I take pride in “we will grow old together.”   These specific words mean so much because when my patients first meet me they say “how old are you, maybe 25?” which I never mind to hear!

Whatever part of your cancer journey you’re in, it’s important to maintain hope. Hope is a powerful tool while you’re battling cancer. And don’t forget to lean on your loved ones for support – it’ll make a world of difference!

That’s my story! I share this to give hope to someone out there as they navigate through their cancer journey, whatever it may be.

When found early, many cancers are treatable, which is why it’s important to schedule your age and health appropriate preventative screenings.
