In recognition of Women’s History Month, Crystal Run Healthcare is highlighting the critical role of preventive OB‑GYN care in supporting women’s health at every stage of life. In a recent WJFF Radio Catskill interview, Dr. Kim Estler, OB‑GYN at Crystal Run Healthcare, shared insights on why routine screenings, awareness, and ongoing patient‑provider relationships are essential to long‑term wellness.
Preventive care across every life stage
Women’s health needs evolve over time, and preventive care helps address those changes proactively. Dr. Estler emphasized that OB‑GYN care is not limited to reproductive health but often becomes a cornerstone of overall wellness.
“Women’s health includes reproductive care but also general health that applies to everyone,” Dr. Estler explained, noting that OB‑GYN care is often part of a long‑term relationship focused on prevention and regular checkups.
From contraception and menstrual health to pregnancy, menopause, and bone health, regular visits allow providers to tailor care based on a patient’s age, history, and individual risk factors.
Why screenings and awareness matter
Routine screenings—such as Pap tests, mammograms, and other preventive exams—play a key role in detecting health concerns early. Dr. Estler highlighted that while some cancers can be identified through screening, others require close attention to symptoms and open communication.
“Ovarian cancer is one that we worry about because symptoms often don’t appear until later stages,” she said, encouraging women to pay attention to changes like persistent bloating or digestive discomfort.
Awareness and self‑advocacy are essential components of preventive care. Listening to your body and discussing concerns early can make a meaningful difference in outcomes.
Empowering women through preventive care
Dr. Estler also highlighted encouraging progress in women’s health, including greater openness around these conversations and expanded access to care through telemedicine, particularly for patients in rural communities. She noted that as the healthcare workforce and leadership continue to evolve, there is growing awareness and support for women’s health—building on the work of clinicians, advocates, and leaders who have long championed these issues. These shifts help strengthen preventive care by improving access to screenings, follow‑up care, and ongoing patient‑provider connections that support women’s health at every stage of life.
Prioritize your preventive care
Women’s History Month is a reminder that preventive care is an investment in lifelong health. If you are due for a well‑woman visit or have concerns you’ve been putting off, our obstetrics and gynecology team is here to help.
