About Obesity and Obesity-Related Health Conditions
Obesity is a serious condition that can compromise your health, happiness, and longevity. Obesity forces the organs—especially the heart and lungs—to work harder, and it places excessive stress on the joints.
Obesity can cause, worsen, or increase your risk of several health conditions, including:
- Sleep apnea
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- High cholesterol (hyperlipidemia)
- Infertility and sexual dysfunction
- Fatty liver (excess fat in the liver that can lead to inflammation and liver damage)
- Heart attacks and stroke
- Joint pain and osteoarthritis
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome (a hormone imbalance that can disrupt menstruation and ovulation)
- Cancer (obesity increases the risk of some cancers)1
- Depression
The Weight Loss Surgery Program at Crystal Run Healthcare is designed for patients who have exhausted traditional methods of achieving lasting weight loss. We offer several weight loss procedures that are well established as safe and effective, including:
- Laparoscopic gastric banding: A minimally invasive procedure to restrict the amount of food your stomach can hold; the surgeon places an inflatable band around the upper portion of the stomach; when the band is inflated, it separates the stomach into two parts: a small upper pouch and a larger lower pouch.
- Laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery (sleeve gastrectomy): A minimally invasive procedure to reduce the size of your stomach, restricting the amount your stomach can hold; it is so named because the resulting stomach pouch is shaped like a sleeve or banana.
- Gastric bypass surgery (Roux-en-Y): A procedure that involves creating a much smaller stomach pouch (around the size of a chicken egg) by removing a portion of your stomach; gastric bypass is both a restrictive procedure (limiting the amount of food your stomach can hold), and a malabsorptive procedure (changing the way your body absorbs nutrients).
- Revisional Bariatric Surgery
Which surgery is appropriate for you will depend on several factors, including your health history, BMI, and co-occurring health conditions.
- Medical Management (Pharmacotherapy): Our providers can also prescribe medications to curb your appetite and help you lose weight without surgery.
Are You a Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery?
To qualify for bariatric surgery, you must have a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 40 or have a BMI over 35 and co-occurring health problems, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and/or sleep apnea.
If you meet these requirements and decide you’d like to move forward with weight loss surgery, you will be scheduled for a comprehensive physical exam; be evaluated by a cardiologist, pulmonologist, and nutritionist; and join one of our weight loss support groups. All of these appointments can be conveniently scheduled in one day, all in one place.
Deciding whether to undergo weight loss surgery is a serious and life-altering decision. For many people suffering from obesity-related health complications, bariatric surgery is a lifesaver.
