Welcome to Crystal Run Sports Medicine Performance Services! Crystal Run Healthcare is now offering Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET) for competitive athletes ages 13 and up! Professional, collegiate, adolescent, club, and endurance athletes can benefit from CPET performance testing by assessing their current fitness level and utilizing test results to help guide and improve their training for peak performance. Athletes will work with Dr. Justin Conway, a board-certified Sports Medicine specialist, and Hospital for Special Surgery-trained physician, and Dr. Geoffrey Hulse, a board-certified Pulmonologist and Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians. Dr. Conway is an experienced sports medicine physician who works with athletes of all competition levels, serving as a Team Physician for Mount Saint Mary College Athletics, Hudson Valley Renegades, and Kingston Stockade. He is also a Member of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team Medical Pool. Dr. Hulse has experience working with competitive athletes and professional teams to evaluate medical issues that impact performance, like chronic cough and shortness of breath, and utilizes state-of-the-art technology, including Chest X-rays, CT Scans, Bronchoscopy, and Pulmonary Function Testing, in addition to CPET.

Among the first in the region to utilize CPET and Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) for both medical and performance use, Crystal Run Healthcare’s goal is to support athletes with a comprehensive medical analysis with a focus on cardiovascular health. We offer both self-pay performance testing and insurance-covered testing for athletes depending on clinical symptoms and medical history.

Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing offered at Crystal Run Healthcare

CPET can test several body functions of athletes in one 45-minute session, including:

  • Resting Metabolic Rate: Resting metabolic rate is the total number of calories burned when your body is completely at rest. Your resting metabolic rate supports breathing, circulating blood, organ functions, and basic neurological functions.
  • VO2 Max: VO2 max, or maximal oxygen consumption, refers to the maximum amount of oxygen a person can use during an intense exercise. Your VO2 max measurement is often considered the best way to gauge your cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance, as it tests the efficiency of oxygen delivery and consumption in your body.
  • Lactate Profile: Ideal for those looking to perfect their training regimen, a lactate profile test is a progressive exercise test to see when your body can no longer supply oxygen for energy during an intense workout. In particular, your physician will identify the associated heart rate where you produce more lactate than your body can reuse and recycle, typically through finger-prick blood tests.
  • Caloric Expenditure Profile: Your caloric expenditure profile measures the total number of calories used per hour while determining the breakdown of fat versus carbohydrates at different exercise intensities. Knowing how your body burns calories will help to establish training zones, perfect nutritional strategies, and test the effectiveness of some of your exercise programs.
  • Metabolic Basic (VO2 Max, Lactate Threshold): By testing both your VO2 max and Lactate threshold at once, you will be able to see a comprehensive evaluation focused on your maximum oxygen intake and use during high-intensity and endurance-based exercise.
  • Metabolic Advanced (VO2 Max, Lactate, & Caloric Expenditure): Utilizing three of the tests above, your physician tests your endurance, energy levels, and calorie use. This test is most beneficial for someone who wants to optimize their dietary needs throughout different training zones to achieve better results.
