About Me
What made you want to become a health care provider or what is your earliest memory of wanting to be one?
I remember as a toddler “operating” on my grandfather with my plastic toolbox as he lay on the floor laughing. Years later when I was in my surgical training, I visited him after he had just undergone a real surgery. He reminded me of these “surgeries” I used to perform on him and told me how happy he was that I was performing them for real now. Funny enough, I use similar tools in surgery now as the plastic toys I once played with (though usually not plastic anymore).
What do you love most about your specialty? / Why did you choose your specialty?
Nothing compares to seeing how happy a patient is after recovering from surgery and how much better they feel compared to before the operation. I love seeing how much a good surgical outcome can impact someone's life. I chose spine surgery because it can be a scary situation to learn that you have a spinal problem. Being able to guide someone through this with either surgery or non-surgical treatment is special and I am honored to be able to do so.
How do you connect with your patients?
I try to connect with my patients by understanding their goals, desires, lifestyle, and needs. Spinal problems can be complex, and designing a treatment approach is equally as complex and individualized. Whether it’s your golfing game or taking walks with your dog that is important to you, I will make it my goal to help you get back to what is important to you.
What are your interests outside of the office (hobbies, activities)?
Family, hobbies, and interests are central to health. I enjoy travelling with my wife to explore historic sites and the natural beauty of the world. I also love playing basketball whenever I get a chance, especially when there is a good pick up game going on.
What is your advice for your patients?
Stay active, stay flexible, and keep your core strong!
