Our team of highly-skilled and full-time endocrinologists, nurse practitioners, and diabetes educators and nutritionists all work together to help patients successfully treat diabetes and prevent its complications. Some of the services offered are group diabetes classes that are recognized by the American Diabetes Association (ADA), group nutrition classes, and a diabetes support group. One-on-one teaching is also readily available for those with newly diagnosed diabetes and also for patients who have had diabetes for years and are looking for updated educational material, as well as a general refresher. Additionally, we have expertise in initiating and maintaining insulin pump therapy for patients, as well as continuous glucose monitoring systems. With all of the tools that Crystal Run Healthcare’s endocrinology department has to offer, we are improving the lives of our patients with diabetes every single day.
What Is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects the body’s ability to process sugar. People with diabetes have difficulty producing or creating insulin, a hormone that converts sugar into energy. The result is that blood glucose levels shoot up, quickly exceeding normal limits. The two most common forms of the disease are type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. The former, in which the pancreas produces little to no insulin, usually develops at a young age. The latter typically develops later in life when the body no longer responds to insulin.
Signs of Diabetes
Common diabetes symptoms of both types include:
- Hunger
- Fatigue
- Frequent urination
- Dry mouth
- Itchy skin
- Blurred vision
Diabetes Treatments
A diabetes specialist at Crystal Run Healthcare will first seek to diagnose the condition using glucose tolerance tests. If the test comes back positive, a diabetes doctor will work closely with the patient to create a treatment and management plan that suits the needs of the individual.

A retinal exam is recommended once per year for patients living with diabetes. If you have diabetes, it’s important to get eye screenings regularly to check for potential complications like diabetic retinopathy. Left undiagnosed, diabetic retinopathy can lead to vision loss and potentially blindness. In fact, the disease among adults ages 20-74, accounts for the most frequent cause of new cases of blindness in developed countries.
Diabetic retinal exams are performed in the office and results can be seen immediately when your exam is performed by an Ophthalmologist.
